PROFILE:
Piero Sembenelli has worked on many projects for international financing institutions such as the World Bank, the Interamerican Bank, the Asian Bank and the International Trade Center of the UN UNCTAD/GATT of Geneva. He is an expert in multipurpose project planning and at supervising and coordinating working groups for large geotechnical projects.

In 1983 he founded a Consulting Engineering Firm, named PIERO SEMBENELLI CONSULTANT which in 1997 was incorporated as SC SEMBENELLI CONSULTING srl and since has successfully completed over 200 professional assignments in 40 different countries. He is currently the President of SC. He designed tunnels, high dams, reservoirs, light rapid transit systems, reinforced soil structures and was the project construction engineer for the upgrading of 4 Italian motorways. He has been responsible for the design of 8 lanes motorways.

Dam engineering has a paramount position in the experience of Piero Sembenelli. He has designed and assisted during construction of more than 30 large dams among which Itaipu cofferdams and earth-rock dams on the Parana, San Roque 205 m high dam in the Philippines, Esna earth dam on the Nile, Three Gorges Cofferdams and Ertan Cofferdams. He served as member of the Dam Safety Panel of Experts for Xiaolangdi and Jangya dec dam projects in the People's Republic of China both financed by the World Bank. He is currently a member of the Dispute Review Board for Turin depressed Railway Project and of the International Panel of Experts for Mosul dam on the Tigris river.

In the field of geosynthetics engineering he has a 4 decades long experience. He has completed more than 30 assignments and projects which involved the application of geosynthetics in embankments on soft soil, reinforced soil, erosion prevention, large dams and waterproofing reservoirs.
