PROFILE: Piero Sembenelli has worked on many projects financed by international Institutions such as the World Bank, the Interamerican Bank, the Asian Bank, and the International Trade Center of the UN UNCTAD/GATT of Geneva. He is a multipurpose project planning expert, working groups' supervisor and large geotechnical projects' coordinator. In 1983 he founded PIERO SEMBENELLI CONSULTANT private practice that from 1997 is been continuing its activity as SC SEMBENELLI CONSULTING srl and since has successfully completed over 250 professional assignments in 45 different countries. He is currently the President of SC. He designed tunnels, dams, reservoirs waterproofed with geomembrane, motorway, light rapid transit systems, reinforced soil structures. He has also been the project construction engineer of the upgrading of 4 Italian motorways and the engineer responsible for the design of 8 lanes motorways. Dam engineering has a paramount position in Piero Sembenelli's experience. He has designed and assisted the construction of more than 30 large dams among which Itaipu cofferdams, the earth-rock dams on the Parana, the 205 m high San Roque dam in the Philippines, the Esna earth dam on the Nile, the Three Gorges Cofferdams and Ertan Cofferdams in China. He served as member of the "Dam Safety Panel of Experts" for Xiaolangdi and Jiangya dam projects in the People's Republic of China both financed by the World Bank. He has been a member of the Dispute Review Board for Turin depressed Railway Project. He has a 5 decades long experience in the field of geosynthetics engineering. He has completed more than 30 assignments and projects involving the geosynthetics application in embankments on soft and reinforced soil, erosion prevention, large dams and waterproofing reservoirs. He is the author of over 100 technical papers published in specialized international reviews and served as General Reporter and State of the Art reporter at several international conferences. Since September 2009, on behalf of the group of engineering companies CICP, he is responsible for the design of excavations, geotechnical investigations and temporary works to protect the excavations (40 Mmc) for the Third Set of Locks construction to double the Panama Canal. |
